Her parents told her that years ago a small plane had crashed in the lake, and that to their knowledge no one had ever bothered to yank it out. She searched for it, because there’s a limit to how many raft games one can play when she’s an only child. Parents should consider that before giving up. In fifth grade her class read Hatchet, and that nasty part about the dead pilot soured her hunt, so she had to find a new game and that was how she learned to back dive months before any of her friends.
